How to tell if my bat is dead?

i have an easton stealth speed bat and i can't tell if the aluminum part of the bat is dead. i know that if you hold the bat by the barrel and hit the end on the ground and don't get a ringing sound with an all aluminum bat then it is dead, but this model has a composite handle and will absorb the shock
